The questions clients ask most often before deciding.
Do I need FSSAI registration for a home kitchen?
Yes. A home-based food business — tiffin service, baking, pickles, a cloud kitchen — is a food business under the Act and needs at least Basic Registration. Turnover up to ₹12 lakh a year puts you in the Basic tier at ₹100 a year, so the cost is not a reason to skip it.
What is the difference between registration and a licence?
They are the same regime at different tiers. Basic Registration is for turnover up to ₹12 lakh and is granted by the local authority on Form A. A State Licence covers ₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore and is granted on Form B with more documentation. A Central Licence is for turnover above ₹20 crore, importers and exporters, multi-state operators, and premises at airports, seaports and on the railways.
State or Central — how do I know which I need?
Turnover decides it in most cases: up to ₹20 crore is State, above is Central. But four things force a Central Licence whatever your turnover — importing or exporting food, operating in more than one state (for the head office), running an e-commerce food business, and operating at an airport, seaport or on the railways.
I have outlets in three states. How many licences?
A Central Licence for the head office, plus a State Licence for each state where you have premises. So three states with a head office in one of them means one Central Licence and three State Licences. The Central Licence does not cover the individual outlets.
